Regular Events

This site was mothballed in April 2022. This page has been restored temporarily to visibility because of a discussion on the Facebook page where a similar resource on FB was proposed. I’ll leave it here for now as it might be useful to anyone wanting to check whether events that were possibly active up to the beginning of 2022 might still be active in 2023. However, I won’t be updating it or trying to maintain it in the future as it’s now seven years since I left the area, and it will disappear again eventually. 🙂

[Updated 25th January 2022 with a few things I’ve heard about recently. Not an exhaustive update at all!]

[Updated 18th March 2020]

After discussion with Fliss Burke, who originally launched the Sabrinaflu site, we’ve agreed that it’s not really practical for us to continue to keep this page adequately updated even after the Covid-19 crisis abates. I will, for the moment, leave the page as it is, and if I’m contacted directly about changes/corrections, I’ll do my best to flag them here, but the page is inevitably going to be less and less accurate as time goes on. The Events Listings/Resources page does list some alternative resources, though I won’t generally be continuing to maintain that page either.

I’m not in a position to go through checking all these again, I’m afraid, so don’t go to anything without checking with the organizer or venue. But then, that was always my advice!

[Updated 17th March 2020]

Because of the Covid-19 health crisis, a large number of regular events have already been cancelled or at least suspended. I’m afraid I can’t promise to keep on top of all the events listed here as they go offline and (hopefully) resume further down the line. Of course, I’ll remove anything I know to have stopped happening altogether in due course. Where I can, I’ll continue to repost any relevant information on the Sabrinaflu group page on Facebook. Whether you decide to go to events that are still running is up to you, of course, at least until the government decrees otherwise: for the moment I’m leaving the list intact with contact details – where I have them – so that you can check on current status.

This page includes formal folk clubs, sessions, open mics etc. It also lists some events that were formerly listed here but are or may be defunct. Further information about defunct events is welcomed, but I don’t promise to add new events, whether one-offs or regular sessions.

Anything marked [unconfirmed] hadn’t been confirmed as of 31st July 2017 or later. Feel free to contact us with corrections, and updates, but I won’t be adding to this site in general… I don’t live in the area and I can’t give this site as much attention as I used to. For reasons of time management, I won’t be re-checking regularly, so recommend you check where possible before setting out. 🙂 I do flag individual events fairly scrupulously on the Sabrinaflu Facebook page.

See also the Shreds and Patches Shropshire sessions page (this probably won’t be updated again, sadly) and amandalynnemusic (doesn’t seem to have been updated since 2012). The Folk Orbit link formerly given here has expired, and I haven’t found an alternative site. (Thanks, Peter Rowan, for pointing it out.) The Mister Red site (formerly to be found as cresby.com) has info from this area as well as several other interesting features. The Worcester traditional music page lists quite a few events from Worcestershire and thereabouts. Folklife  is a print magazine, primarily, but includes some online resources for several areas of the UK. [I used to contribute listings to the magazine, but my last column appeared in May 2020.]

  • I’ve never been to the Telford Acoustic Music Club, and I’ve heard a couple of widely divergent accounts of its history.. However, there seem to be two versions of it on the same night. One is the The Crown, Market Street, Oakengates TF2 6EA. The other is at the Old Fighting Cocks across the road. (That’s 48 Market Street, Oakengates TF2 6DU.) According to the management at the Old Fighting Cocks, the people who go there aren’t necessarily there every week. Still, if you go to one and there’s nothing happening, I guess you can pop across to the other. And you can try checking with the venues beforehand.  Telford Acoustic Music Club – not mentioned on the Facebook page, so check before going.

4th Wednesday

  • Kings Head, Tenbury Wells: Americana/old time/bluegrass session. More info from christopher.andrews42@gmail.com. I’m not getting mail about this any more, but I have an idea that it’s moved to The Press Room in Leominster. On further enquiries, it seems that the session at Tenbury is no more, so this seems to be the replacement, though the pub’s own page says ‘all styles welcome’. For more information contact Chris at the email above, or contact the pub.

Attendance varies, depending on who among the regulars is on holiday, etc., but it is a welcoming session at which styles vary across the board, depending on who turns up. As an aside, at 26 years+ we believe it to be the longest running session in the county. Hurrah! Thanks, Phil 🙂
  • Old Post Office, Shrewsbury (that’s a pub!): Acoustic Knights session. Richard Powell says: Anyone wanting to try out their voice, anyone who has taken a break from music and wants to ease back into it will get a warm welcome. We are not a critical bunch, and are very supportive of each other, so it’s a great atmosphere to nurture abilities, no matter what your age, instrument or musical style. We currently play : 30’s, through to 90’s and contemporary music, plus a little flamenco and even Zorba the Greek, and the occasional pan pipe tune ! [Can’t confirm that it’s still going: check with the pub. I was there in August 2017 and nothing seemed to be happening, and the person behind the bar knew nothing about it.]

Last Sunday

Indeterminate status, may be defunct:

  • Steady Music Session in Kinver: The Plough and Harrow is no longer hosting this event, so there was no session in October 2016. In a Facebook posting here, Mel Biggs said that a new team of volunteers hoped to find a new venue for November but the Facebook page here  has been static for several years.
  • The Cuckoo’s Nest Folk Club, Folk at the Nest: the Cuckoo’s Nest Folk had artists on once a month and presumably ran other nights, but the web site doesn’t seem to have been updated since 2013: use the contact page or check with the Foxlowe Arts Centre – which does seem to run folk events, but not necessarily regularly – for further information.
  • Plough Inn Irish session, 26 Broadway, Shifnal, TF11 8AZ Shifnal. [Suspended from June 2015 because of lack of support: hopefully enough people will express interest for it to be resumed at some point, maybe even July. We’ll let you know if we hear anything, which we haven’t as of February 2020]]
  • Folk on the Fosse
Was at The Black Horse, Marton, Warwickshire 01788 567338 – I can’t find any indication that it’s still running and the web site seems to be dead.
  • Folk Plus
Formerly The Littleton Arms, Walsall, last heard of at The Pretty Bricks,
5 John Street, Walsall, WS2 8AF. Every Tuesday. Events not updated since 2008 but there are a couple of email addresses. [Update: freddyheady points out that the Littleton Arms was demolished in 2006.] I certainly wouldn’t head out there without checking with the pub and/or the contacts on the Folk Plus page. Web site seems to be dead.
  • Folk at the Swan
The White Swan, Mill St, Bedworth -2nd Weds of every month (8.30 start). Web link not functioning: however there is a Bedworth Folk Club site here.
  • Traditional Song Sessions
First Thursday of the month from 8pm
Kitchen Garden Cafe, Kings Heath, Birmingham B14 7SA [That page generates a 404 error: however, there are irregular folk events at that venue listed here.]
  • Birmingham Traditional Music Club
Sundays 8.30pm at The Wagon and Horses, Adderley Street, Birmingham [Can’t find a live web links as of 14-2-15]

  • The Blue Bell, Tushingham SY13 4QR   Sadly, Neil Moore tells us that ‘The Bell has closed and Phillip Stafford has passed away’. Apparently there were two sessions there: the other one has moved to the Wheatsheaf in No Man’s Heath (see above, 4th Tuesday).
  • It seems that the Song House is no longer a regular monthly event – check the Song House link for further information and updates.

The Loggerheads in Shrewsbury has a weekly Thursday night session run by Russell Davies; very varied trad folk, gypsy jazz and Americana. Songs and tunes. usually a spare guitar available to share. Start at 8.30 pm goes on until closing time.

Thanks. I don’t get to Shrewsbury much now, but the Wheatsheaf night a few weeks ago seemed a bit ego-trippy. If I find myself in Shropshire on a Thursday again, I’ll give the Loggerheads another try. Haven’t been there since the move, and it sounds more like my sort of session.

There is also a weekly tune/song session at the Crown pub ( by the abbey) in Shrewsbury every Wednesday. Mostly tunes. Landlord provides free food for the players !

Thanks. That’s already listed, though I didn’t know about the food. 🙂 But then the last time I went it was in the Globe in Coleham Head, IIRC, and that was in the early noughties.

Thanks, Terry. Good to hear from you. I didn’t know the Seven Stars had gone. Coleham doesn’t seem a very lucky place for pubs these days!

    Hi David
The Black Swan, Much Dewchurch, HR2 8DJ stills runs weekly on Thursdays. Attendance varies, depending on who among the regulars is on holiday, etc., but it is a welcoming session at which styles vary across the board, depending on who turns up.
As an aside, at 26 years+ we believe it to be the longest running session in the county. Hurrah!
